On 13 September 2025, a cancer awareness outreach program to Kampung Paya

Lebar, Hulu Langat was conducted by the Breast Surgery Unit, Department of Surgery,

Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. Collaborators of the event included the Breast

Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA) and Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan

Keluarga Negara (LPPKN) Selangor.

There were informative talks raising awareness on the detection, investigation,

and treatment of breast cancer. Interaction between the speakers and participants was

encouraged with prizes awarded to those who contributed during the questions-and-

answers sessions. Goody bags containing daily essentials necessary for the local

community were given to attendees who completed the screening circuit. Additionally,

children were invited to take part in a puzzle competition and were rewarded with small

tokens based on their speed and accuracy.

Overall, a total of 50 women were educated on self-breast examination

techniques with the help of breast models. Thirty-one of them consented to clinical

breast examinations conducted by the team, none of which revealed any abnormal

findings. After learning about the importance of mammography in the early detection of

breast cancer, six women accepted vouchers for free mammograms provided by LPPKN

Selangor.

It was a meaningful event which increased awareness of breast cancer among the

Orang Asli community in Kampung Paya Lebar. We hope to continue such endeavors in

the future to bridge the gap in cancer management and improve survival outcomes

among Malaysia’s indigenous populations.
