Dr Lau Peng Choong is a Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon in UMSC/UMMC. He started his career in surgery in Penang after graduating from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2001. After serving the community in Penang, he joined the UMMC in 2005 and completed his Masters of Surgery in 2009. University of Malaya appointed him as a Senior Lecturer after his graduation. His subspecialty interest is in Upper Gastrointestinal and Minimally Invasive Surgery. His training includes a fellowship in Advanced Gastric Cancer Surgery in Seoul, South Korea plus he also did a year of clinical fellowship in Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery in Coventry, United Kingdom under the sponsorship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Dr Lau’s main area of interests are in gastrointestinal cancers (especially gastric and oesophageal), gastric ulcers, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, gallstone disease, inguinal and abdominal wall hernias as well as bariatric procedures (surgery for weight loss and metabolic syndrome). He is also an expert in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery and believes that keyhole surgery does benefit the patient in hastening the recovery time and shorten their time off work.
Dr Lau has helped trained many young doctors as well as surgeons in the country since joining UM. His involvement in the medical community includes being active in the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia(AMM), Malaysian Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society(MUGIS), Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Society of Malaysia (PENSMA), Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia(ELSA) and Asia Pacific Hernia Society(APHS).
